Yet another LOLCat

And another...

Aren't cats funny?

I found some more extraordinarily funny LOLCats.

Medical mystery needs some attention

If I could champion a medical advance, it would be this - I'd like the medical community to come up with a way to determine why you are experiencing a headache. It's one thing to take a pain reliever to numb the experience. But headaches usually happen for a reason - they're usually an indication that some thing's wrong. Sometimes, it's something you can't do anything about, like people who experience headaches when the weather changes. But other times it's something that you could be doing to make things better. Dehydration often leads to headaches. Early signs of disease can lead to headaches. They can happen when your immune system is down.

I'd like to know why I'm having a headache when it happens so I can do something to combat the cause, not the effect.

Who's with me?

Yes, I'm experiencing one right now...... it's lasted for 2 days so far.

Not slacking off... oh no...

Sorry for the lack of posts in the last couple of days. I've got a busy schedule, but should be back on track by Sunday.

I've like.... got a life or something now...... like wtf?

Things getting ridiculous now.....

Just when you thought the music copyright issue couldn't get any more bizarre, here's a story of a garage in the UK being sued over its mechanics using personal radios while working and that the music, protected by copyright, could be heard by colleagues and customers. This amounts to the "playing" or "performance" of the music in public and as such they're guilty of infringing copyright.

Why can't I sue the individual who insists on playing rap on their car stereo at 120 decibels? I really don't want to hear it, but I have to anyway.......

Pay what you want - it all goes to the band....

If you're a fan of the band Radiohead, it may interest you to know that they're releasing their latest album In Rainbows online. The album will not have DRM. Here's the wildest part - you can pay whatever you like. Seriously. Radical.

Sshhhh..... the geohounds may be napping....

It's been a while, eh? Maybe I did that on purpose to catch some folks napping.

Anyway.... I bring you 'Where Is It' edition 35. You know the score.

Name the city. Click the picture for a bigger view.

Big!

How big is the universe. Oh..... it's big. Nova begins to delve into the theories of how big the universe is at this web page. If your brain can handle the possibilities, it makes for a tantalizing read.

Infinite numbers of places, beyond our view and outside of our time. Other universes, each in its own space and begun in its own time. It boggles the mind it does.....

The music wasn't bad either...

There was a time I read comics. Well - OK - only one comic actually. Heavy Metal. That was one awesome comic. The art was fantastic. The contributing writers and artists were varied. The story lines ranged from the risque to the absurd. To a young male into sci-fi, it was the perfect mix.

So when I heard about a movie coming out in 1981, I was excited. The problem was, I got into a wee bit of trouble around the time that it got released to theatres. So I missed the first run. I never got to see the movie until it came out on VHS.

I bring it up because as I surfed the channels tonight, it was on TV. Sure it's corny now, but you know the old story about association with memories of youth.......

I am so fascinated by this country....

A Flickr member took a great collection of photos while visiting Japan over a period of 36 days.

Lucky for us.........

Alternate software

Sometimes a program we grow to enjoy gets updates that make it a bloated avatar of its former greatness. Here are some original applications I have used in the past followed by the current replacements I have installed on my computer:

Adobe Reader - Fox-It (for viewing PDF files)
Eudora - Thunderbird (email client for Darlene - in my case I use nothing now [webmail])
Windows Media Player - VLC (for playing video files)
ACDSee - Irfanview (for viewing and basic editing of pictures)
Winamp 5.35 - Winamp 5.08 Lite (for playing mp3 files)
WinZip - 7-Zip (file compression utility)
CuteFTP - Filezilla (FTP client)

Best defacing of a Canadian currency piece ever

Yeah... yeah... it's illegal.

But it's damn funny.

Found here.

Cheese please

Do you like cheese? Would you like to learn about a new cheese each day of the year? Then 365 Cheeses is where you need to go.

I found a sleeper movie

Eclectic. It's one of my favourite words. I use it to describe my taste in music, movies and more. Today I had a chance to see another film that falls into that category. Meaning - I loved it.

Romance and Cigarettes. A film by John Turturro. Watching it, I was amazed at the cast. James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet (my secret dream date - don't tell Darlene), Mary Louise Parker, Steve Buscemi, Mandy Moore, and Christopher freakin' Walken (as his usual eclectic self). It's a musical. Which almost disqualifies itself from my list of movies I would like right off the bat. But it's so corny. That means good. Did I mention it has Kate Winslet? As a smoking hot redhead having an affair with the dad / husband character played by Gandolfini.

This movie is funny. The dance sequences are witty. Mary Louise Parker almost steals the show as one of the daughters. Unfortunately, her scenes are few. Of course Christopher Walken is as goofy as ever. This is a sleeper hit. Almost didn't see the light of day. I highly recommend it to lift your spirits.

"You're not a 'buy and hold'"

A pretty girl posted on craigslist, wondering why she can't score guys who make at least 500K/yr.

A guy who makes 500K+/yr replied. Read both here.

Scary.....

Supposedly this video represents 3D motion technology applied to a still photograph to turn it into a lifelike avatar, complete with head turning, blinking eyes, facial gestures - the works. Here's the article.

Soon, you'll be able to create your very own version of Max Headroom - starring you! Or your mom! Or your dream partner.........

You know about LOLCats, yes?

OK, huge disclaimer: Please do not take offense at what I am about to post if you are a Christian and your sensibilities are easily bruised. If you are, better not click the link.

But come on - LOLBible! You knew it was coming - right? A sample:

1. In teh beginnin Invisible Man was invisible, and he maded the skiez and da earths, but he did not eated it.

Happy Thanksgiving y'all

Hope you got your fill of turkey or whatever your personal or ethnic choice of holiday meal was.

To my American friends: Canadians celebrate this holiday earlier than you because our harvest has to take place before the infamous weeks long blizzards move in and the land is writhing in snow snakes.

That's a little Canadian exaggeration humour for ya there..........

Our new deck

While I was away in the UK, we had someone build us a deck in our back yard. We've been looking forward to a deck for years but either didn't have the money or couldn't find someone to do it.

Now it's done and we are super pleased with the result. We found a true craftsman through some friends and he did a great job. Now we can't wait until next summer.......

A quiz about me!

Think you know me well?

Then take this quiz about yours truly.

Let me know how you did.......

Try it if you think it's so easy.....

I don't know a lot of people in the arts, but ever since I got into acting classes and all, I've been introduced to a few folks in the business. Plus, anyone I know who has any connection with the arts now suddenly relates to me on a whole new level. Except for one small problem.

It seems that improvisation is the black sheep of performance art. I get a noticeable upturn of the nose whenever I mention that I'm focusing on improvisation. It's not just my perception either, Darlene noticed it too before I even said anything.

Message to the arts world: Improv is not easy. It may lack the nuances of learning dialogue and evolving characters, but that challenge is replaced by the necessities of unbridled imagination and the ability to think on your feet. Otherwise, it's still acting and it's harder than you think.

Vehicle graveyards

I found this great post on the deputydog blog - where vehicles are left to die.

Ships, planes, trains, subs...

Calgary has a late night talk show....

It's just not on TV.

Last night I decided to do a Loose Moose double header. Now that their fall season has started, Loose Moose puts on 2 shows on the first Friday of each month. They have the regular Micetro Improv show from 8pm until 10pm, then at 10:30pm there's a show called Friday Night Late, with Moosians Rob Mitchelson and A.J. Demers.

Friday Night Late is basically a live talk show / variety show with a live band and guests from around town. Last night they had roller girls and a local comic book writer (my apologies for not remembering his name). The show includes a monologue, skits and musical performances too and lasts about an hour. It was a nice breath of fresh air and only costs $10 per person!

Some day I hope to become part of their schtick to do a recurring guest character a-la Larry 'Bud' Melman or something. Well, that's my dream.......

You might be a redneck......

You've got nothing better to do, right? You're reading this blog, aren't you? Then why not head over to the Redneckapedia? A sample:

Bar Code: Them's the fight'n rules down at the local tavern.
Cauterize: Made eye contact with her
Fibula: A small lie
Hacker: Uncle Leroy after 32 years of smoking.
Impotent: Distinguished, well known
Modem: What ya do when the grass get too high.
Paralyze: Two far-fetched stories
Seed: past tense of "See."

Stroke it off.....

I love technology solutions. Especially when it involves other technology.

I own a Palm Tungsten E. It's known for having a flaw. The power button at the top tends to wear out prematurely. It's easy to turn the Palm on - just press any button on the front. But the only way to turn it off is to use the power button or wait for it to time out, which wastes battery power.

Luckily, I discovered Offstroke. This nifty little application for the Palm allows you to turn the thing off by running the stylus across a particular part of the screen, in this case I turn it off by going from top left to bottom right in the graffiti area. So I don't need to use the power button any more.

Hans (guitar) Solo tee

Ever on the lookout for fun, cool tees, I spotted this:

I love it!

Shine on....

Unless you just met me you know I'm a huge fan of the Floyd. So it should be no surprise that I was looking forward to the release (finally) of David Gilmour's concert DVD from the show he did in the Royal Albert Hall.

The concert starts off with a trio of tunes from Dark Side of the Moon, then David tells the crowd that he's going to play the entire album On an Island, his latest solo effort. Crosby and Nash are there to lend backup vocals just like on the album. I have to say, David's getting sentimental in his old age, the songs centred around friendships, love and appreciating the good things in life. He still has a few licks left in him though.

The second part of the concert was even better in my opinion. Shine On was a highlight but what did it for me was the first live performance of Echoes I've seen since the old Pompeii video. Although it was shortened a bit to save time (the original piece is over 23 minutes long), Gilmour and Wright did a superb job of recreating the dynamic range of the song, even ending the song on an intimate note.

In the end, I really enjoyed this performance, which had elements of raunchy, Pink Floyd styled rock at one end of the spectrum and quiet, David Gilmour solo stylings at the other end. It's not The Floyd reformed - but it's the next best thing. With guests! Like David Bowie.....

Once a hosehead........

I was just checking the latest viewer stats at video.ca on those Great White North II videos Bernie and I did last year.

Holy crap! 36264 views!

Way to go eh?
