It's big

The massive fire that forced the evacuation of Fort McMurray and surrounding areas is massive.

As of 29 May, it's almost 580,000 hectares big (perimeter).

As you can see from the map, that's almost long enough to span from Edmonton to Red Deer.

Letter health grades for restaurants

While we were in San Diego, Darlene noticed that every place that serves food had a giant letter displayed in their window.

Upon further investigation, we found out that by law, the valid, current, department of environmental health inspection grade assessed to each eatery has to be displayed in the window. If it's not, they can be heavily fined or closed down.

I like this. We should do something like this in Calgary or even Alberta.

Things I learned lately - 27 May


  • In the US, popular girl's names in many states include Olivia, Emma, Ava and Sophia. Some states are alone in their most popular name. SD - Harper. FL - Isabella. DC - Genesis. NM & HI - Mia.
  • On 8 May 2016, on a particularly sunny and windy day, the 57.8 gigawatts of electricity that Germany was using was being produced by 95% renewable energy. Solar power met 45.2%, wind 36%, biomass 8.9% and hydro 4.8% of the total. Power prices actually went negative for several hours.
  • Six states that allow marijuana, use legal tests to determine impaired (on marijuana) driving, that have no scientific basis.
  • Cosmetic limb-lengthening surgery is a booming business in India. People typically try to add 2-3 inches to their original height to do better with their careers and marriage prospects.
  • Tom Petty mentions in a documentary that his life was changed on seeing the Beatles on TV in 1964. Little did he know he'd be playing with 2 of them later in life (George and Ringo).
  • You can only upgrade to Windows 10 for free until 30 July. After that, it's a $120 upgrade unless you buy a new computer.
  • The speed limit on interstate highways in Montana, Idaho, Utah is now 80 mph (130 km/h)
