Who is the message for?

I spotted a license plate with EZG 649 today. Seriously. Is this the universe trying to tell that vehicle owner to go and buy a lottery ticket or what?
(6/49 is the name of one of our national lotteries)

Maybe it's telling me to go buy a lottery ticket.

Maybe the vehicle owner works for the lottery.

Don't give it a chance or anything........ twits

A new TV show I was enjoying very much thank you - Smith - has been cancelled. Hey Nielsen families....... I'm holding a finger up in your general direction. Care to guess which one? [turning around] Oh, CBS...... I've got one for you too....

Merde.

Don't worry...... it'll only cost $6 billion

So the US Senate approved the building of a 700 mile long fence along the border with Mexico. Actually, they can only get enough money to build 370 miles of it. Problem is.......... the US shares an almost 2000 mile border with Mexico. Do I really need to say anything else here?

I guess it's really more gymnastics than dancing....

Here's a clip of a kid with some serious dance moves. Freaky.

We truly have not reached our potential yet

This is a truly remarkable story about a Ben Underwood, who has been blind since he was 2 years old. He has somehow managed to learn the art of echo-location. He sees by making sounds with his mouth and listening to the echo. This guy is amazing. It just goes to show you that we have yet to really develop our senses to their true potential. We have radar ferchrissakes!

I'm a very good driver.......

I decided to try the GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test. I got 100%! Yay! OK........ it really wasn't that hard.

I got 100%....... [frivolous dancing commences]

Gives 'industrial architecture' a whole new meaning

Freitag is a Swiss company that uses recycled truck tarps to create a popular line of messenger bags. Their flagship store in Zurich is built of recycled shipping containers, stacked 26 meters (86 feet) high.

Those heinous Democrats!

It comes as a surprise to nobody that the Fox News people are conspicuously biased against Democrats. So what does a poor network do when a Republican gets himself in serious trouble? Label him a Democrat, of course.

Watch out for that rock............ no - the other one!

I love coming across cute animations and it looks like I've done it again. This time, littleFoot tells the story of a BigFoot youth who wanders out of the woods and into mischief. The site has a few other mini movies to watch too.

Ride the shark

Remember the line rider thingy I mentioned a few days ago? Well my effort was amateur compared to this........

Many thanks to j-walk blog for the find.

Art by mother nature

Imagine a pavillion that is shaped by the wind. Each layer moves independently. The movement can be used to generate electricity to illuminate it at night. I think it's just a design at the moment......... but I like it.

Neat or cheesy? You decide.....

This web page is not in English, but it seems to be a collection of frugal do-it-yourself projects made from everyday household items. Some of my faves include these fangs made from a white plastic fork, but check out the fingernail decorations made from postage stamp cut-outs, and the clothespin spring-loaded chopsticks.

Pure maple goodness

Learn how to make roses from coloured (fallen) maple leaves. Enjoy this if you can - we don't have maple trees in Alberta (not native anyway).

This is a real shortie

It's been a while since I've seen a cool vehicle for sale anywhere. Well, check out this chopped Volkswagen van on eBay. It's even got gull wing doors!

Damn you Darwin!

Why do young men walk into schools and start shooting? The answer may surprise you. It has nothing to do with the proliferation of weapons on the streets. Nor the effects of violent video games. Nope. It has to do with being inundated with evolution-based messages........ I'm not making this up, folks.

A real phrase in pictures (potentially)

Someone needs to be captured on film walking past this sign carrying their child in a grocery handbasket. Figure it out.....

Read the story about Hell, Michigan here.

Karl's tips on life - restaurant feedback

There's really no reason not to tell your server when your food is bad. They didn't cook it, they probably know you know they didn't cook it. Most importantly, it shouldn't come out of their tip....... it should only be the deciding factor on whether or not you return and when.

Know what's in your food

I found what may be the best laid out web site about healthy foods. The World's Healthiest Foods will give you the goods on what great nutrients are in the best things to eat.

For example, a 1/4 cup of walnuts contains almost the entire daily requirement of omega-3 fatty acids. Cool. Check out all the good stuff garlic has in it.......

"You'll wonder where the yellow went"

If you weren't around (or too young to recall) TV when it was still black and white, check out these vintage television commercials. There's 8 sets of clips. They're swell.

If I can't understand you........ you're a terrorist

Do you speak any foreign languages? Better think twice before you do so at an airport.......

Honey.......... we can skip the appointment

Is this the advice............... or the directions?

Thanks to Ernest for this find.

Things we're unlikely to see any more of.....

I decided to try a quick list of things we're pretty unlikely to see again:
  • New cereals with the word "sugar" in the title (such as Sugar Crisp).
  • Seinfeld show spinoffs.
  • New job titles with the word "man" or "woman" (such as Mailman).
  • Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunctions.
  • Anything revolutionary and new from Ford/GM.
  • New medications with the word "gay" in the title (such as Ben-Gay).
  • Smiling people in airports.
  • New electronic media without restrictions on their use (welcome to the age of DRM).
  • Gasoline below $0.80/litre.
  • Resumes without the words "facilitator", "instrumental" or "team-player".
  • Pink Floyd performances.
  • Youths without at least one piercing or tattoo (likely both).
  • US Presidents with the last name "Bush".
  • Utility bills without at least 4 different types of fees.
  • New Osama Bin Laden video footage.
  • Bill Clinton on the Fox network.
  • Goofy fashion trend from the 80s like leg warmers Whoops! Scratch that!
  • Hollywood scripts that have Mel Gibson driving drunk, getting pulled over and berating a police officer.
  • Reporters invited into Michael Jackson's home.

Rosie's first report card

So Rosie (my Roomba robot vac) had a chance to do 2 cleaning jobs since we bought her. I thought I'd give you all a report on how she did.

The first job I gave her was tough. I set up the base station / charger along a wall in our front-most room and let her loose to do the living room, kitchen and reading room. I blocked the rest of the house off with an 'invisible wall', thinking this area would be more than enough to get her started. Boy, was I right about that.

Rosie started exploring the rooms, cleaning as she went. She slowly got further afield, but always seemed to be returning to go over spots she had already been to. As I read the manual, it became clear that Rosie doesn't do extremely well in large, irregularly shaped, disjointed areas. She has problems mapping areas well that have a lot of obstructions too. But I did that on purpose. So I made note to only give her smaller jobs to do next time. Regardless, she cleaned up pretty well and I interrupted her cycle to send her back to her base to recharge. She'll get a much more logical task (albeit a more challenging one) next.

After a good night's rest, I let Rosie loose on our master bedroom. This would be the ultimate test, since there are whole civilizations of dust living under our bed. We closed the door and went out for some errands. When we got back, Rosie had already returned to the base and the job was done. To my amazement, the floor was clean - even under the bed. I had to unravel a dryer sheet from the brush [groan], but otherwise, she was no worse for wear.

So far, I haven't been able to find the cup holder - so Rosie won't be bringing me my tea any time soon.

The Windows song

Supposedly, while you install Windows XP (Home I'm guessing), a little ditty plays. It's the Windows Welcome Music song. It only ever plays (of its own will) during an install. I've never heard it - I don't know why. Well, now I know where the secret little tune hides. You'll find it in this directory: C:\WINDOWS\system32\oobe\images\ and may be named 'title.wma' or 'windows welcome music.wma'.

I am altering the pants. Pray that I don't alter them any further

Just a list of lines from Star Wars improved by replacing a word with "pants". Vote for your fave......

Dancing the Roomba

1 October, 2006. The day Karl bought his first robot. Yeah, I decided to splurge and go get the Roomba Discovery. I'd been shopping around and some stores had it, but very few stocked it. It retails for $400 in Canada. We found it at Linens & Things - the last unopened box. Then Darlene tells me we have a coupon for 20% off in a flyer at home. The flyer is sitting in the recycle bin in our basement. Off to fetch the flyer I go. When I get back to buy the thing, it rings in at $50 less than marked. SCORE! $350, minus 20%........... damn, it sure pays to recycle. The guides were smiling upon me today.

I'll submit a report once Rosie has finished her first few cleanings........

Sometimes tough ads are needed

I need to get a few of these to put on the windshields of the rugby guys who park on our street, then race out of the area through the playground / school zone. The sign reads "Please don't speed near schools".

"Officer...... I can't stop it.... we really need to leave now

Would you like to potentially get yourself into trouble? I mean real mischief. This 'toy' sure makes it possible. It's called the Suspicious Looking Device and it has one purpose - look very suspicious. It looks like something that is very dangerous....... the colour, the shape, the numerals counting down, the noises it makes when you touch it, but the best part is that it tries to scoot away from you (on hidden wheels).

Wanna win the top prize on America's Funniest Home Videos? Just let this thing loose in an airport and film the madness that ensues.......

DRM awareness

Tuesday October 3rd is Anti-DRM day.

If you don't know what DRM is, or if you don't think it's important to understand, this day was created especially for you. DRM is something that, if left unchecked, will seriously cripple every consumer entertainment device you buy - preventing you from doing numerous practical (and legal) things with your music, movies, electronic books, etc.

Do yourself a favour and learn about this issue before the entertainment industry buys.... sorry..... "lobbies" your government into allowing this nonsense to get worse. My clients who use iTunes and Windows' protected WMA are already feeling the pain....

By the way, there is a way to get entertainment without DRM................. you download it off the internet. Ironic, huh?

Google recipe book

One of the things Darlene loves to search the internet for is new recipes. She's gotten quite good at it and has introduced us to some tasty new dishes over the last year or so.

But what if you've got some ingredients lying around, looking to become that next great meal, but you have no idea what to do with them? That's where "Cookin' with Google" comes to the rescue. Just type in whatever ingredients you have to work with and this page searches the top epicurean sites through Google. The results usually have the recipe name in the title.

Ok............. 4 week old "aged" bacon, sprouted potatoes, fuzzy cheese, green onions (are onions supposed to be green?).......
