When I found out that Sam Rockwell was acting in a new sci-fi movie (Moon), a smile broke out on my face. I got to watch said movie this past weekend. Here is my review.
It's one of those sci-fi movies that paid more attention to telling the story than drowning you in special effects. Not unusual for Duncan Jones (David Bowie's son btw), who cut his teeth making music videos.
This movie was actually written for Sam Rockwell, who really carried this movie. He is beside himself (inside joke). Kevin Spacey was so impressed with rough cuts of Sam's acting in Moon that he agreed to sign on for the voice of GERTY, the computer / robot that looks after Sam in a very Hal-like performance. The story:
Sam Bell is weeks away from completing a 3 year contract, working solo on a moon base for Lunar Industries. All he wants is to return to his wife Tess and their infant daughter Eve, who he has not seen (in person) since she was born just prior to his leaving for this job. He gets into an accident and is rendered unconscious. That's when he makes an unexpected discovery and his life begins to unravel.
I enjoyed it. If I had to find anything wrong with it, I'd have to say that it lacked a certain degree of tension that is characteristic of most movie plots. But I think this little sleeper will quench the thirst of most of my sci-fi loving friends for the foreseeable future.
