Firefox users are discovering that a recent Windows Update installed the .NET Framework assistant extension to the browser without first asking for any kind of authorization. The extension comes with the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. The add-on adds a feature that most Firefox users wouldn't want anyway - "the ability for web sites to easily and quietly install software on your PC." In true Microsoft style, the add-on is very difficult to uninstall. Initially, the uninstall button was grayed out and manually uninstalling the add-on required modifying the Windows registry, resetting changes made to the Firefox user agent and removing the .NET Framework extension files. Luckily, there is a fix now available from Microsoft that restores the uninstall button.
Message to Microsoft: One of the reasons Firefox users made the switch is so that software couldn't be uninstalled without permission. So leave it the f#@k alone! Thank you.
