Never mind Google Planimeter. The panacea of map tools is here! GMaps Pedometer lets you double-click on points on a map and calculates the distance of the path you just drew in miles or kilometres.

Now I know it is 2.4km from my house to the nearest Tim Horton's.

Now you don't have to guess how far it is to drive to work for the purposes of reporting it to your insurance company.
