Our third stop was Cannon Beach, Oregon. It's one of those quaint beach towns that you really have to explore on foot, as many of their shops are tucked into little alleyways. But we didn't go there to shop - we went for the beach. When we arrived around noon, it was still a bit foggy. I was worried the sun wouldn't come through for us, but it did. And the sunset....... wow! If you've never seen the Oregon coast, I'd start with Cannon Beach. What sets it apart from all the other beach towns are the offshore igneous rocks - the Needles and the famous 235 foot tall Haystack Rock. We took a nice stroll on the beach at low tide and were able to walk right up to it. I took lots of pictures, some of which I will post to my Flickr page as soon as I have time.
We stayed at The Stephanie Inn. It's quite expensive, but we wanted a guaranteed comfortable place right on the beach. We lucked into one of their Carriage House suites, separate from the main hotel building. Besides the great view, we could walk right onto the beach and of course hear the surf from our suite. We bought some firewood and made a bonfire on the beach at dusk. I roasted some marshmallows over the coals. I haven't done that in a long time.
Stay tuned for part 4...
