Things I learned lately 13 May

  • The sound we make when we sneeze isn't universal, but culturally conditioned. A person in the United States or Britain might make an "ah-choo!" sound when they sneeze, while a person in the Philippines might say "ha-ching!". People who have been deaf since birth don't add in any extra sounds at all, leaving only the sounds associated with the movement of air a sneeze represents.
  • Cooking eggs actually makes 91% more protein available (almost 6g of digestible protein versus 3g from a raw egg).
  • If you're planning on digging a tunnel to the other side of the world, be prepared for disappointment. Only 15% of the land area of the Earth is antipodal (directly opposite via a straight line through the center of the planet) to other land areas. 85% of the time, your tunnel would open out into a body of water.
  • Apple was still making the iPod touch until very recently. Think iPhone but with no phone. It still has internet, a camera, apps, sensors, and the ability to pay with NFC. They start at $250 and top out at $500 for one with 256GB of memory. You won't find it on Apple's web site unless you search for it specifically, and soon, you won't find it at all, as Apple stopped production after 20 years and now they're selling out fast. There are probably a lot of young folks who got by just fine with an iPhone with no phone. You still get Messages and Facetime after all. The only stumbling block would be reliance on wifi access.
  • Bacon and pork belly are the same thing. The difference between them is the curing process. Bacon is cured with salt and spices, pork belly is not cured.
  • The peanut butter and banana sandwich has been referred to as a favorite of Elvis Presley, who was renowned for his food cravings such as the Fool's Gold Loaf, a loaf of French white bread filled with a pound each of bacon, peanut butter, and grape jelly.
  • Sheryl Crow is 60 (2022).
