Don't let your business burn down

Some folks who own a Dairy Queen in Calgary watched it burn to the ground from an electrical fire. To rebuild it, they submitted a development permit application to the city, who declined it, saying they instead wanted the owner to redevelop the space into a multi-story building with the Dairy Queen on the bottom floor (but no drive-in). The city said that because the building burned down, it's treated as "a new application in the evolving context of the location", an opportunity to build something better.

Aside from the fact that the owners likely don't have the money to build something bigger, I bet this news raises a few eyebrows in my neighbourhood about a certain eyesore that just won't go away because of greed.
