OK, not entirely true - I got a call from a partner solicitation company. They were wondering if I had heard of their USB network stick. It basically allows the connected device to connect to the internet (assorted fees per month extra) in a manner similar to a 3G cell phone. The point? (Practically) anywhere internet on the mobile computing device (also known as a laptop).
I responded that I did indeed know about this device. They asked if I would be interested in getting one. My response was no. They wanted to know why. I said that I did not need such a device. They asked if I owned a laptop. I lied. "No" was my response. My in-depth knowledge of all things computer and network related had me convinced that this was the end of the road for my soliciting friend. No laptop - no need for anywhere internet connection. I was mistaken.
My zealous retailer had another question. "Do you own a desktop?" In fact I do, I replied, curious where this line of questioning would lead. "Then you could use this network stick on your desktop." I told him that would be redundant. He asked why. By this point, I realized that the seller actually had no clue what they were selling. I told him that considering that I already paid an internet service provider for a permanent, wired connection to the internet, trying to sell me a mobile, anywhere connection was moot. I added that trying to sell me a network stick for my desktop was akin to trying to sell white paint for an igloo. OK, I didn't actually say that, but I really wanted to.
He finished the conversation by offering that if I ever changed my mind, I knew who I could call.
