I wish I could find more information about such a fantastic use for recycled plastic than a short article on an eco-web site. Because this is a smart use of ground up plastic that would otherwise end up in a landfill (or worse, floating in the ocean) - used as an alternate aggregate in concrete.
There's a few reasons why this is an important breakthrough. For starters, plastic is very difficult to recycle. It's expensive to sort plastics and many types can't be used together in new products. Companies that make things out of plastics also tend to avoid recycled plastic as it isn't as aesthetically pleasing as the virgin stuff and costs more to use in many cases. In this application of recycled plastic, it doesn't matter what colour the plastic is, it is purely being used as a replacement aggregate, which now doesn't have to be dug out of the ground.
I hope someone is all over this as a business model and creates a new demand for recycled plastic so we don't keep throwing the stuff out.
