The other day my home router died. It was 10 years old. A quick drive to the store and I picked up a D-Link brand broadband wired router for $50. Setup was not what I would call effortless. But I did manage to get it working. Then Darlene got onto her computer and all hell broke loose.
This situation was somewhat difficult to fault find because things were never stable for more than a minute. We had internet connectivity, then it seemed to go down. Whenever we tried to get onto web sites, they would lag something awful - then fix themselves. Pinging was hit and miss with lots of dropped packets. I was ready to blame my ISP, but after finally looking at my router log, it was obvious the router was to blame, as it was the culprit responsible for dropping the packets. A little digging around on the net and it seemed I was definitely not the only one having this problem with this model. Worse, nobody had a solution - not even D-Link. Well, you know - besides the obvious one..... 'return for refund'. Which is what I did.
I bought a LinkSys model instead. $100. Got it home. Gave it a supreme work out. No issues at all. If you're thinking about a D-Link wired router to save money..... you may get issues. Let me go on record as saying that I have used other D-Link devices in the past with no problems. My D-Link wireless access point (WAP) is still chugging along just fine.
The moral of this story: Sometimes, the lowest priced item is 'crap'.

I seem to remember us doing the exact same thing. I'm no computer technician, but we did have a D-Link, and walked on eggshells around it for a year or so until we finally threw it out (and now we have a linksys).
Same router same problem same solution
