While we were in Kirkland Washington (near Bellevue), we noticed that they take their pedestrian crosswalks very seriously. More than 60 of the crosswalks have yellow flags on either side of the crosswalk in little buckets attached to a light post. You grab a flag before you cross to help drivers see you better. It's called PedFlag. These same crosswalks also have in-road lighting that lights up and flashes to make the crosswalks easier to see when folks are using them.
Anything that improves crosswalk visibility is a good thing. Calgary could learn a lesson or two from this.
