I'm always fascinated by the journeys our lives take and the connections that are created when we make certain decisions. Looking back, it's always thought-provoking to imagine how things would have been different if you had made a different decision at a certain time or life event. If you haven't read my first instalment, go ahead and read it now. Go ahead - I'll wait. When I was in my 20's, I spent a few years trying to find someone I could grow old with. A lot of people suggest that not finding your mate until you're 26 isn't that bad, but to me it seemed like an eternity. There were times when I began to doubt I was going to find someone.
We met at a party. Darlene was invited by the hostess, who she was working with (see footnote). But she couldn't find a babysitter in time and wasn't going to attend. She decided at the last minute to go anyway and bring Lee-Anne along (who was 9 at the time) and put her to sleep in a bedroom at the house. The hostess had intended to set Darlene up with the guy boarding at their house (someone I worked with). He was not exactly her type, but as it turns out - it wouldn't matter.
Meanwhile, I had been hanging out with a group of people for years and had grown.... I don't know.... I guess I just wanted change (LOL!! Careful what you wish for) . I was invited to this party of my friends, but not much in the mood to go either, but alas I also made the decision to go at the last minute. Hours went by before I even paid much attention to Darlene, prompting the best ice breaker line I've ever gotten from another woman in my life - "Are you gay?" We started talking. At some point in the party, most of the guests had left except for Darlene, the hosts and myself. We sat and watched a movie together, I called her the next day and the rest is history.
Let's draw the connections. If either of us hadn't gone to that party we never would have met.
Footnote: That job Darlene had, which led to the party invitation, etc.? The day of the party was her last day of work at that job. Plus, she had only been in the job two weeks. So it would seem that the purpose of her getting the job in the first place was to meet her future husband.
The picture is us from 1988.
