There was a time (not long ago) when we all spoke about computer storage capacity and memory in megabytes (MB). Common were computers with a couple MB of memory and a few hundred MB of hard drive storage space. That evolved to gigabytes (megabyte times 1024 (GB)). At the moment, personal computers might have 2 to 8 GB of memory and several hundred GB of hard drive storage space. You might have some external hard drive storage space as well, totalling in the hundreds of GB or even a terabyte (gigabyte times 1024 (TB)) or so.But the very near future (2-5 years according to some estimates) is all about the petabyte (PB). Unfortunately, a petabyte is hard to visualize. Until now.
Pictured is approximately 1 petabyte of hard drive storage (in the first 3 racks) as of 2009. In 2014, that is expected to be shrunk down to the size of a typical hard drive. Don't laugh - one of those cabinets would have held only 64GB only a few of years ago, barely what would go into a typical PC today.
