Look ma..... no bottleneck!

So, in case you didn't know, one of the things standing in the way of making computers work faster is the hard drive. The hard drive (where all your files are stored) is probably the biggest bottleneck in the whole computer in terms of speed. It's the reason why it takes so long to open programs and documents, etc.

So some guys decided to replace the standard mechanical hard drive with solid state drives (no moving parts) in a 24 disk RAID array. RAID can give you even more speed by sharing the storage across multiple drives at the same time. So they hooked up 24 SSDs giving a total storage capacity of 6TB and tried it out to show folks how computers would perform if the drive speed bottleneck were essentially removed.

Pretty impressive.
