Comes through in a pinch

So my first experience on the road with the new iPhone was in Vegas. How did it go? Pretty good I must say. The suite we stayed in came with free wi-fi, so I was able to do a lot of research about the day's activities on the iPhone without using any data roaming. I have to admit, using a small screen like that versus a laptop took a little getting used to, but the pinch-zoom trick made quick business of too-tiny-to-read pages. We planned bus trips, shopping excursions, checked the weather and the news and even checked how our lottery numbers were doing. As with most other things sporting the Apple logo, I found things I didn't know how to do reveal themselves quite intuitively on this phone.

Me like.

Karl, I am going on a trip to LA in April, and I want to use the fone for internet, gps, etc.

Did you purchase roaming package(s) when you went down, or did you just suffer the cost of data roaming?

I would have suffered the cost of data roaming (I've got no package), but I stuck to using the phone's data apps only while in the hotel (to take advantage of the free wi-fi). I'm guessing some people won't be able to restrict themselves that much.

Well, I did without the bells and whistles the last two times I was down there; choosing to keep the fone on airplane mode the whole time out of sheer paranoia. This time around I will be using the fones full functionality while down there. I will let you know what it costs with roaming packages and the like to have that capability down there.

I look forward to hearing your experience.

Just so you know, you can disable data roaming in the phone (I did, worked out fine). This makes sure you only use the functions of the phone not requiring a data connection (unless you have wi-fi).
