I wonder how place names are chosen sometimes. In Alberta, we don't have towns and cities named after saints or lakes or mountains. I was thinking about a town just south of Calgary called Nanton (pronounced nah'tin).
Then I spoke with some friends about how it got its name. "Hey Darren, watcha doin' this weekend?" "Nah'tin."
But seriously, we have some doozers in Alberta. Coleman, Vulcan, Carbon, Acme, Cereal, Veteran, Mirror, Viking, Entrance, Legal.

This should open up a huge discussion on place names and pronunciation. Love the little town of Drain, Oregon.
Also years ago visited with a friend to W. Virginia and saw roadsign for "Powhattan" I assumed it was pronounced like MANhatten. Nope,Powtan. Retro
If you follow the railway the towns are named in alphabetical order and there was a town or siding every 7 miles. Where I lived for a while in Sask-atch-e-wan, that is to help you people that don't now where the syllables are in your neighbouring province. The town where I lived was Watrous and the towns on each side were Venn and on the other side were Xena Young Zelma and then it started over with Alan, Bradwell, Clavet.
FYI
