It's totally modular dude

I think I would like to see a technology company invent a new home gadget. It would be a module based brick that allows you to custom build a stack of useful devices that interconnect with each other to save space on your desk and integrate the functionality of each module. Among the modules I imagine fitting together are:
  • Power strip (large ones for big power adaptor bricks and little ones for regular plugs)
  • Line conditioner (for removing power spikes etc.)
  • USB hub
  • Wireless router
  • Wired switch
  • Firewall
  • Outboard audio amp to power decent speakers
  • External hard drive enclosure (supply your own hard drive)
  • External DVD recorder drive enclosure (supply your own DVD recorder drive)
  • Wireless audio transmitter (to send music to a stereo or powered speaker somewhere in the house)
By having the wireless router and external hard drive for example, you've just created a NAS, allowing you to backup or store files from any wireless capable device. If you had multiple external hard drive modules, you could set them up in a RAID configuration (for less risk of data loss). The possibilities are endless.
