While eating lunch with some colleagues today, one person lamented that they had no idea what to get their sister for Christmas. Most at the table either had nothing to offer or nothing the colleague thought was of any value.
Then I asked, "Does your sister have a cell phone?" He answered that she did. "Then get her some cell phone charms." None of the guys even knew what cell phone charms were. I motioned to one of the younger women at the next table, "Do you have any cell phone charms?" She nodded. "Where do you buy them?" She indicated that they can be gotten in Chinatown. "There you go" I concluded.
The folks at the table were gobsmacked. Impressed that I knew about stuff they had never heard of (They're engineers) and that this old guy had a great gift idea.
So why should I keep all these good ideas to myself? If any of my wonderful readers need help with gift ideas, let me know in the comments.

What do I get for my son who is 29, is in Air Force. And seems to have everything?
I don't know how much money you were planning to spend, but here goes. At the high end, I'd recommend a GPS device for the car if he doesn't already have one. Is he a technology geek? Go to thinkgeek dot com and check out the thousands of geeky gifts in all price ranges that they have. Another suggestion is a stylish watch, like Fossil's Starck line (which I own two of). They are very cool watches.
I need to figure out something to get for my sister, who just recently bought a house. She is 25, and I'm really not terribly sure what her interests are these days. I am getting her a framed picture of her and I from our trip to Disneyland, but I don't want to just leave it at that. She said she needs summer type house stuff as they moved in just recently in late fall.
I also need to get something for my Father (52) and stepmother. My father is very hard to shop for, as he typically just asks for magazine subscriptions and gift certificates. They just had a new baby.
Keep in mind also that I want to keep the gift costs down around the $20 - $30 range this year.
For the sister I recommend a nice set of wind chimes. Very summer-y and will add a special ambience to the yard when the breeze blows.
If your dad and step-mom just had a baby, I would recommend the Baby Einstein DVDs - take your pick.
