100 things in 100 days - number 74

74. I find city lights just plain beautiful. And fireworks.

City lights........ my love of which started in Montreal where I grew up. I spent a night on top of Mont-Royal once, partly to be with a girl I had just met on a blind date and partly so I could catch the summer twinkling of the city lights. Mont-Royal has some amazing lookout points where you can park your car and take in the view (such as the one pictured here). Even Calgary has some decent viewpoints with which to take in the downtown city lights. Whenever Darlene and I stay at a hotel in a city, we always try to get the lit view.

Fireworks...... my love of which also started in Montreal during the Benson and Hedges International Fireworks competitions each summer. I know many cities have this event, but I truly believe Montreal pulled it off the best, with the venue right in the middle of Ile Ste-Helene, half way between downtown and the south shore. They closed the Jacques Cartier bridge an hour before show time so that pedestrians could make their way onto the bridge for a great vantage point. Then, to make it even better, they simulcast the music on FM radio so that anyone who brought boom boxes along (and many did) could get the full effect. The end result - the fireworks seemed to go off right in front of your face. It was beyond awesome.

There's only one other thing that can compete - the stars in the country away from other light pollution. Yep. That's livin'.
