100 things in 100 days - number 94

94. My fave movie is Blade Runner. Vanilla Sky gets honourable mention.

Awww man. Blade Runner. The movie that holds the record for the movie most watched by yours truly. I must have seen it at least 25 times - I lost count after 15. First of all, you just cannot go wrong with Harrison Ford - he rocks. Second, Vangelis' soundtrack is, in my estimation, the best matching of music to a sci-fi story ever attempted. Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty - "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe." The visuals were mesmerizing. Then there was Daryl Hannah and Joanna Cassidy.

Vanilla Sky just messed with my brain. And that's a good thing.

Yes man, I totally agree with you, but I've seen it more than 25 times :)

So are you a Deck-a-Rep or a Deck-a-human?

I never really gave it that much thought. When I heard the theories starting about "maybe Deckard is a replicant", I was slightly intrigued, but I never thought of him as a replicant. So my vote is for human.

Also, don't be under the influence of anything approaching a hallucinogen while trying the "watch Wizard of Oz with DSOTM as the soundtrack" experiment either.

(DSOTM = Dark Side of the Moon)

How come Gaff knows what Deckard is dreaming (the unicorn) ?

That's a very good question.

One of my faves as well. Ever read the book? Phillip K. Dick was a very odd and paranoid guy, but it's still quite fascinating. It's quite different from the film. My bet is that Decker is human, but you could easily argue that he's just a paranoid replicant, and that maybe his paranoia is a side-effect...

Yes it is a good question :)
Especially since Deckard knew Rachel's implanted memories: the spider eaten by its offspring, the time when she and her brother snuck into an empty building (they were gonna play doctor), etc.

How did he know that stuff? By looking into the Tyrell Corp. files Rachel was asking him about (he says he "didn't look at them")...

So how did Gaff know about Deckard's possibly-implanted-dreams? Hmmm.... :)

Rob, I've read the book, love it. In fact I'm obsessed with PKD, I can't get enough of him!

The key word here being 'obsessed'. I'm sorry John, I couldn't resist. Please forgive me.

I always chalked up Deckard's knowledge of Rachel's background to the fact that he 'did' read her file, he just lied about it to appear detached.

As far as Gaff's origami sculptures, I never placed too much importance on them, thinking that it was just the screenwriter's way of introducing symbology into the film.

Oh yeah, I candidly admit it, I'm obsessed with both PKD and Blade Runner, no apologies needed :D

As far as the origamis go, I think they're more than a screen-writer's toy, they actually describe Deckard, from Gaff's point of view:

The first one, a chicken, done when Bryant tries to convince Deckard to do the job. It says "Deckard is a chicken", his refusal to do the job is really his fears acting up.

The second, made after Deckard's encounter with Rachel, is a man with a boner, meaning, "Deckard is sexually attracted to Rachel".

The most interesting one is of course the third one. What does it say about Deckard? :D
