If I had my own radio station - Delerium

If you enjoy the sounds of the music artist Enigma, have I got a group for you! Delerium are in fact a project of Vancouverites Rhys Fulber and Bill Leeb, but they are only the music and lyrics of the outfit. They hire known chanteuses like Sarah McLachlan, Kristy Thirsk and Leigh Nash (Sixpence None the Richer) among others to provide the ethereal vocals. As a big fan of electronica with an ethnic flavour, this project is my cup of tea.

I discovered Delerium when Semantic Spaces was released, way back in 1994. The single Flowers Become Screens is a little cheesy, but you can forgive the cheese when you hear the vocal. Karma, released in 1997 is a much more grounded album and has many vocal guests - I consider it their best album. Duende and Twilight both have a very aboriginal feel. This is atmospheric electronica at its best in my opinion. Fulber and Leeb are masters of electronic gear and they put their mastery of the instruments to wonderful use. Silence will remind you of Enigma with its chants, but when Sarah McLachlan’s voice kicks in, mimicry ends and Delerium sets a new standard. Wisdom is another great track.

The album Poem is more of the same, but is slightly more acoustic.

Nuages du Monde is their latest album, having arrived in 2006. Nuages has a Eastern feel to it - and that's not a bad thing. Extollere and The Way You Want it to Be are a good sampling of the album's mood.

I totally agree about the magic of Kristy Thirsk's voice. She has contributed to similar projects - Balligomingo and Sleepthief feature Kristy.

On youtube there's a live performance of "Silence" with Kristy and Sarah together - it just doesn't get any better!

For another angelic singer, check out opera-trained Shara Worden in "My Brightest Diamond" - she soars!
