Victoria BC, is thinking of installing these high tech urinals for night-time use by those (men) who can't wait to get back to the hotel / home / homeless hangout to relieve themselves. These things disappear into the ground by day and pop up at night, allowing the men to drain the vein somewhere other than on the walls of the Legislature Building.
The device doesn't actually offer any privacy, just a receptacle for your post-processed beer. This is all very interesting, but what about the ladies?

Hmm I have always feltthat the bathroom should fold into the wall at home so why not publicly. I have a couple safety questions. Does the thing sink into the ground if someone is still in it? Does it lock, does it get washed underground and um, can it punch it's way through frozen snow the next morning? I have these troubling questions you see.
All valid questions.
It would be interesting to see what would happen if the thing started going back into the ground while someone was using it. Maybe it will have some kind of switch on the floor that would prevent it from going down while someone was using it.
I have no idea if it gets cleaned whilst underground.
For the record though, I don't think Victoria has to worry much about frozen snow.
