If you're thinking about getting an mp3 player this year, stop limiting yourself to thinking only about the iPod. There are other great players out there - many of whom sound better, play more types of music files, aren't tied to the DRM nastiness of [cough] iTunes [choke] - and - are cheaper. The site
Anything but iPod is a wonderful place to see for yourself. I have the Creative Zen Touch and I love it.

OK, Karl. I have to rebutt this one. *At the time* I bought my iPod, it was the only one that supported rating on-the-fly. That is, I could load my unrated songs onto my iPod, rate them from 1 - 5 as I listened to them, and re-sync to get a fresh batch of unrated songs while uploading my rated songs. I didn't have to spend hours at my computer seperating the wheat from the chaff. I could do it at work, in the garage, walking the dog, etc.
I had a Creative MP3 player for a while, until its cludgely interface and badly written software locked up my machine. I sold it on EBay after two months.
As for DRM, I realize that this is the newest e-whipping horse, but on iTunes its fairly easy to get around. Just rip the CD in question with anything but iTunes to mp3, then import it. Voila. No, I don't buy from the online store.
Admittedly some of the newer players may have caught up. Geeks building toys for other geeks is fun, but won't be very popular. The technology should fit the user, not the other way around.
BTW, I believe in making airplanes easy to fly and cars easy to drive too.
I'll be the first to admit that the iPod interface is cooler and 'easier' than other players. I'll also admit that the software that shipped with the first generation Creative Zen players was awful. I'll just say I chose the Zen for its rugged feel, better sound (IMHO) and great battery life. The software is much better this time around too.
But hey - to each their own opinion.
I use to give iPod users a hard time for the oh-so-fashionable, over priced players. That was untill I bought an iPod.
The beauty of my purchase is all these long time iPod users now want the latest and greatest iPod. No longer will the 20GB Photo iPod do, they need to watch video on their iPod. So I helped a friend in that quest. I bought the 20GB Photo iPod for $120.
I love it when people need to keep up with the Joneses.
