Tipping in Canada isn't that hard to figure out........ considering that an average gratuity is supposed to be 15% of the total bill, all you need to do is double the Goods & Services Tax (7%) and add a few cents. That's basically how I calculate a basic tip. If they do better than average, they get more, if they do less, they get less (unless I feel bad for them - which happens more often than not.
But servers play this silly change game where if they owe you $7 in change, they'll give you a $5 bill and $2 in coins. That forces you to either give them a $2 tip or splurge on a (likely undeserved) $5 tip. Well, I used to dig into my pockets and try to give them the average tip amount from whatever change I had, otherwise I'd ask them to break the bill into smaller change.
Well - no more. It's time to teach servers a lesson. You want the 15%? Then you'd better give me the kind of change that allows me to do so. Go ahead - call me heartless.
