All boy toys like stereo systems, computers and the like need a bypass switch in the back that renders all of the knobs and dials and buttons and switches on the front panel of electronics gear unusable. This would prevent little children from inadvertently setting the stereo volume at 115 decibels and also stop the tradition of inserting foodstuffs into equipment trays and other openings. Equipment usually come with remotes, so this shouldn't be an issue for adult use.

That sounds like a good idea, you might still get the sticky fingerprints and Dora the Explorer stickers on your components, but no other 'surprises'.
You could try what I did:
Get a sheet of white flexible corrugated plastic from the hardware store, (like the kind you make signs out of), cut to fit + a few mm on the width, and wedge it across the opening. The white stuff will block the view from curious eyes, but will still pass IR signals.
